Sheila Sutton joined Housing Action Illinois as Housing Policy Organizer in July 2020. She has a decade of direct experience in the housing justice field, having worked in homelessness services and on renters’ rights and affordable homeownership. She started her nonprofit career in nonprofit work in the Chicago Health Corps as an AmeriCorp Member working with the Chicago Boys and Girls Club in 1999. Upon exiting graduate school in 2015, she spent two years supporting and engaging renters and stakeholders in issues related to health and housing as a Healthy Homes Organizer at the Metropolitan Tenants Organization. More recently, as the Homeownership Programs Manager at Habitat for Humanity Chicago, she helped launch an intensive homeownership preparedness education program, recruited and prepared qualified Habitat homebuyers for homeownership, originated loans and obtained down payment assistance, and provided loan servicing assistance and foreclosure prevention support. Sheila is excited to join the Housing Action Illinois team and work with our constituents to advocate for just housing policy throughout Illinois.
