Chris Hampton joined Housing Action Illinois as a VISTA Leader in March 2020. He began his career as a Wellness Director for The YMCA of Greater Indianapolis, where he managed a staff of over 40 employees, including personal trainers, group exercise instructors, and fitness center attendants. During his tenure, he picked up an interest in community health and its role in neighborhood revitalization, which prompted him to serve two terms of service as a Community Outreach VISTA for the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis. As a VISTA, Chris’s role was centered around researching the health disparities in the YMCA’s service areas. He used his findings to work with center directors to develop programming that would engage the community’s most vulnerable populations. Most recently, Chris returned home to Chicago to help his family develop and expand a daycare, school and transportation service.

Chris has an undergraduate degree in exercise science and sport from Millikin University and a graduate degree in Public Policy from Indiana University’s O’Neill School, where he concentrated in Community and Economic Development. He considers himself to be something of a renaissance man; his career has spanned all parts of development, from human development—health and education—to his current role in community development and housing. He hopes this broad perspective helps him make connections and see things others might miss.
