Housing Action Illinois is a statewide coalition formed to protect and expand the availability of quality, affordable housing throughout Illinois.
On January 28, Cook County Commissioners voted unanimously to extend basic renter rights and protections to 245,000+ suburban renter households in Cook County. The Residential Tenant Landlord Ordinance (RTLO) will create safeguards against illegal lockouts, procedures for withholding rent until building problems are addressed, and protections against unfair lease terms. It will also prevent landlords from charging absurdly high late fees and security deposits.
2020 has been a difficult year. As we work to meet these challenges and build a better future for everyone, we are taking a moment to reflect and honor the resilience of individuals and communities throughout Illinois. We are inspired by the ways in which Illinoisans have come together to meet urgent needs, and we are grateful to our members and partners for your hard work in the midst of constant change and uncertainty. We want to share the bright spots that have carried us through the past 12 months, and we invite you to join us in finding silver linings from 2020.
